Research in our group involves several interrelated tracks.

  1. We study molecular families involved in transcriptional and intracellular signaling mechanisms of cell type specification.
  2. We design intersectional or sparse labelling recombination strategies in order to uniquely isolate individual Retinal Ganglion Cell types, and study their development, function and gene expression profiles.
  3. We analyze the circuit function of the identified neuronal cell types by visual behavior analysis.
  4. We recently unveiled a combinatorial transcriptional code for RGC type specification, and generated extensive lists of candidate genes including transcription factors, adhesion, axon/dendrite guidance and extracellular signaling molecules, as well as cytoskeletal adaptors, some of which mark unique RGC populations. Current and future projects in the group combine these established methodologies and resources to understand RGC type specification.

Trainees benefit from one-on-one training from me as well as other senior scientists in our extended group with extensive experieince in molecular biology and genetics. Weekly lab meetings offer the opportunity to discuss progress and challenges with other group members, and each trainee presents her/his data at least twice a year in front of departmental meetings or interest groups comprising retina or vision experts, developmental biologists or genetic experts. Each trainee attends once a year one of the premier meetings of the field, either FASEB, Gordon Research Conference, Society for Neuroscience or ARVO.

Roles and Responsibilities

The succesful candidate will continue or initiate the study of a particular Retinal Ganglion Cell population and design novel genetic tools for its characterization. Focus will be on understanding its neuroanatomy, physiology and circuit function.

About You

A recently obtained PhD in neuroscience, biochemistry, molecular biology, development or genetics will be a plus. Her/His experience in tehse fields should be demonstrated by publications in established peer reviewed journals of the field.

Application

A letter of intent, CV and three letters of recommendation are required. Eligible candidates will be given the opportunity to present to the lab, discuss their interests with the PI and current lab members. In addition, She/He will write a research proposal related to the area of interest.
